Post-op Sedation Instructions

Your child is still under the influence of the sedation medication and may be very drowsy and unable to keep his balance. You need to pay close attention to your child while walking. Therefore, hold your child's hand, and do not leave him unattended.

Do not plan or permit activities for him after treatment. Allow him to rest. Closely supervise any activity for the remainder of the day. Do not be surprised if your child sleeps from one to five hours or even longer. The reactions to sedation differ with each child. If your child is sleeping, do not try to wake him for the first three hours. Children usually become especially irritable if awaken too early while under the influence of sedation.

After treatment the first drink should be plain water. Sweet drinks can be given next (fruit juice, Gatorade, or coke). Small drinks taken repeatedly are preferable to taking large amounts. This is especially important during warmer weather. Soft food in small quantities, not too hot, may be taken once the local anesthetic has worn off. If extractions have been performed, you will be given information in relation to diet.

All children like praise, it is important for their self-esteem. Please make sure you give plenty of compliments to your child after his surgery.

The above is general information. If you have problems or questions during the course of the day, please call our office. We, of course, will be checking with you later as well. We are here to help you!
